TLAW Wins Award for Empowerment Conferences!

The National Conference of Women’s Bar Association (NCWBA) has chosen the Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women (TLAW) as the recipient of the NCWBA’s 2018 Outstanding Member Program Award for TLAW’s groundbreaking work on its Empowerment Conferences.

Several years ago, the TLAW Board of Directors recognized that the position of women in the legal profession has advanced since TLAW was founded, but the same concerns that gave rise to TLAW still exist today. Moving a greater percentage of women into elective office, the judiciary, chief corporate counsel, and law firm leadership is still challenging, with obstacles such as bias and the leaky pipeline keeping women from achieving their full potential.

The Conference was created as a way to address the need for further progress of women in the profession and to serve as a catalyst for continued efforts by women across Tennessee to increase female presence at the highest levels of the profession in the public and private sectors. The inaugural Conference was held in 2016. The 2017 Conference was held in conjunction with a national judicial conference. The evening before each Conference, there is a networking event for speakers and attendees.

The caliber of speakers at the Empowerment Conference is unmatched in Tennessee. Accomplished attorneys and judges provided insight about running for elected office, leadership at law firms, ethical considerations for in-house attorneys, retention in the legal practice, the path to partnership and more. This program is the first of its kind in Tennessee and has been duplicated in a shorter form by women's bar organizations in Nashville and Memphis.

The NCWBA Award recognizes innovative projects, programs, and services for organization members or the bar. TLAW is proud to be recognized for the Conference, which provides invaluable opportunities for women lawyers in Tennessee. The Award will be presented to TLAW at the NCWBA’s national Women’s Bar Leadership Summit, which will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 in Chicago.

If you want to attend TLAW’s award-winning Empowerment Conference, registration is now open for this year’s Conference, themed Right Time, Right Now! More information and registration are available here.

This program will explore many aspects of Nelson Mandela's biography, with particular emphasis on his training and development as a lawyer. It will also describe how President Mandela practiced the skills of lawyering throughout his entire life. The talk will also focus on the deep spiritual life that Nelson Mandela developed, and how this inner life continually impacted his lawyering skills as well as who he was as one of the greatest individuals of the 20th Century.

Lawyers can be humanitarians in addition to being advocates. To be an effective lawyer, one must stand in the shoes of the client and understand what is important to them. A lawyer's overarching duty to the client, court, and public requires a burning commitment to the moral underpinnings of the legal profession, and consciousness of the economic, social, and political factors that shape the world.

The program will connect Nelson Mandela’s life with today’s Rules of Professional Conduct, to show how they are relevant to each of us.

Bill Manning practices business litigation, intellectual property litigation and personal injury litigation, concentrating in the manufacturing and technology industries. Among many professional accomplishments, he has been appointed Chair of a Magistrate Selection Committee, three times to a Federal Court Magistrate Selection Committee and twice to a Magistrate Reappointment Committee. He was previously appointed to the Minnesota Federal Court Federal Practice Committee.

Congratulations and a Challenge: Welcome to the practice of law!

Congratulations to all of the successful candidates who passed the July 2014 Tennessee Bar Exam! You have conquered a taxing, intimidating, and nerve-racking barrier to the practice of law. Enjoy your success and breathe easier now.

So you passed the bar exam and hopefully you have a job or will become employed soon, but now what? Passing the bar exam does not make you competent in any area of the law. It does not sound an alarm for clients to come knocking on your office door. It does not instantly help you win friends and influence people. It does not guarantee you a mentor in the area of law in which you think you may want to practice.

Passing the bar commences your career-long journey in learning what it means to "practice law." Passing the bar is your green light. Now it is up to you to associate with other attorneys and join meaningful organizations, which will help you along this journey and to which you can contribute your talents and skills. I challenge you to join organizations such as TLAW so that you can meet fellow members of the bar, associate with people who share similar interests, learn from attorneys who have been in your shoes (for some of us, that was not so long ago), and contribute to the bar to make it a stronger league of professionals. TLAW, the only statewide women's bar association, joins attorneys across Tennessee from Dyersburg to Chattanooga and from Kingsport to Memphis. TLAW is your opportunity to network with fellow attorneys and develop the career that you envisioned when you applied to go to law school.

Congratulations again! Go into the world and make a difference (legally now).

Is there such a thing as "Female Leadership

In January the business world took notice of General Motor’s new CEO. Instead of hiring a resume with previous CEO’s experience, GM appointed lifer Mary Barra. Unique to most CEO stories, Barra started at GM as an intern and built her way up. But what fascinated me the most was three words in the Business Insider’s article about her. In describing Barra’s resume, writers Paul Lienert and Ben Klayman explained her mentors to be “virtually all men.”

This shouldn’t be surprising to anyone. In a male dominated field, Barra was probably one of the few women in leadership. Despite the strong emphasis on the masculine influences in her career, those watching are struck by her leadership style. Critics describe her management style as collaborative and compassionate. Instead of dominating conversation, she listens before she makes decisions. Admirers call her kind. They find her leadership feminine.

But, is leadership masculine or feminine? Society seems to see parts of human character to be ultimately feminine or masculine. Meekness is innately female while men are expected to be bold. Young women should choose their family’s welfare over their own while men are praised in their success despite their absence. And let’s be honest. If you’re a male with too many “feminine” qualities, you’re labeled soft and sensitive. If you’re a female with too many “masculine” qualities, you’re rude and unapproachable. As a woman who wants to remain compassionate and gentle in the legal profession, such stereotypes leave me frustrated. How can I be transparent in a field that challenges my character with gender expectation?

What I do know is that clients are comforted by authenticity. In a profession viewed as manipulative and cunning, people are attracted to a place that makes them safe. Barra’s leadership style clearly creates such an environment. Whether its labeled feminine or not, it has a place in the law.

As a law student who is just now struggling with that conviction, I do not know the answer. However, I know I want to be apart of the conversation with older female lawyers who have been there. And that’s how the legal profession will adapt. If we as women believe investing in the younger generationundefinedwhether it be our children, their high school friends, or younger female co-workersundefinedto give them that incite, a new generation will learn leadership in a radical way.

Republican Group Seeks to Put More Women in Office

NASHVILLE (AP) – The nation's largest caucus of Republican state leaders plans to spend $6 million to recruit 300 women to run for office in the next election cycle, women GOP leaders said Tuesday.

The announcement was made at a news conference near the state Capitol following a two-day leadership summit of Republican women from around the country.

Last year, the Republican State Leadership Committee identified 185 new female Republican candidates from 36 states, and 84 of them were elected to state offices. The caucus is hoping to get at least 150 elected next year.

"The whole point of this ... is to find qualified women who would like to be asked and would like to have the support of an organization like this," said Tennessee House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville.

Republicans hold a supermajority in the Tennessee General Assembly. Out of the state's 132 legislators, there are four Republican women in the Senate and eight in the House.

Republican National Committee co-chair Sharon Day was among those who attended the summit. She said the funds raised by the RSLC will be used to help female candidates in areas that range from any political training they may need to fundraising.

"We're there as a support mechanism to make sure that they cross the finish line," said Day, adding that she hopes women will also seek other elected positions, such as city councils and school boards.

"It's not just ... statewide elected or federal positions, it's women all across the board, because there are wonderful opportunities for women in all walks of life," she said.

Following the news conference, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Mike Turner issued a statement supporting the Republican effort to recruit more women in particular into politics.

"Democrats believe that this state will be stronger if more women have a seat and voice at the governing table," said Turner, D-Nashville.

He noted an effort by Democrats to form a political action committee that will advocate for women's and children's issues in the state, as well as support female Democratic candidates.

"Our caucus, along with other Democratic groups, will be focused on recruiting and supporting women who can speak to the issues working families across this state care about," Turner said.

State Democratic Rep. Brenda Gilmore of Nashville said most women are naturally more concerned about issues related to children and family, which is why she supports more females in politics – regardless of their party affiliation.

"Historically, when women are in elected positions, more attention and resources get channeled to children and family issues than when men are elected in those positions," she said.

ABA Gender Equity

Study after study has shown that women - in particular those in law firm practice - are not compensated at the same level as men. In August 2012, ABA President Laurel G. Bellows appointed a blue-ribbon Task Force on Gender Equity with a call to action for concrete movement in the issues of equity in the workplace and a principal focus on compensation.

You can help raise awareness of these critical issues by joining the "Click Your Heels" virtual march for gender equity.

Participating is as simple as clicking your heels three times:

1. The link to the website at www.americanbar.org/GenderEquity,
2. The vote button to the right of the red shoes, and
3. The click button.

Congratulations! You now have "clicked" your heels for gender equity.

Why is this important -- and what is the point? The visuals of hundreds of thousands of people descending on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and the sea of people coming together for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963 have become iconic representations of people standing in concert to effect change. While nothing can ever replace the historic transcendence of that day, in this new millennium a virtual voice carries the same power and ability to effect change as a physical presence.

As in 1963, people of today still struggle with the ability to be treated equally in the work place. What is gender equity? It is equal pay for equal work. It is paternity leave without stigma. It is flexible time to meet personal and family needs, while still being able to participate and make a productive contribution to the work place. It is the recognition of the differences between men and women without diminishing the value and contribution each person provides. In a word, it is "fairness."

March with us through the ABA's Day of the Woman on August 10, 2013. For information on Day of the Woman events, visit www.americanbar.org/women.
Click your heels for gender equity .. and spread the word! You can learn more about the Task Force on Gender Equity and download its publications at no cost at www.americanbar.org/GenderEquity.
