TLAW is pleased to invite you to its 2017 Fall CLE Seminar. Registration is open and we hope you will join us for an excellent panel luncheon, followed by a legal clinic in partnership with Magdalene House and the Belmont Legal Aid Society.

CLE Credit: 1.5 dual credit hours for the panel luncheon, 1.5 pro bono hours during the clinic and an estimated additional 5 pro bono credit hours for serving as a volunteer attorney for the Magdalene House Clinic (details and explanations below).
Program Description:
Lunch and Panel Seminar: Comparing Legislation, Economics, and Healthcare for Women & Children in the U.S. and Tennessee, with panelists Anna Carrelle and Brianna Perry of Healthy and Free Tennessee. Please note that lunch will not be served at the Chattanooga and Knoxville locations--feel free to bring your own!
This informational program examines healthcare access and resources available for women and children in Tennessee (as well as other parts of the US), particularly as it relates to expecting women, mothers, and young children, and compares the same to economics, state legislation, and policies impacting women’s healthcare. Healthcare and legal experts from around the state will consider the justifications for these laws and the impact on women’s health, as well as the policies that have a measurably positive impact on women and children’s health in our state.
Magdalene House Legal Clinic: Magdalene House’s mission is to heal, empower, and employ women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction. The Magdalene House comprehensive model offers women hope and healing through a holistic residential program, employment with its social enterprise, Thistle Farms, and a growing national and global network dedicated to changing a culture that allows human beings to be bought and sold. The two-year residential program based in Nashville, Tennessee, provides housing, medical care, therapy, education, and job training free of charge for up to 32 women and serves hundreds more with advocacy and referral services. Most of the Magdalene residents have criminal records and previous criminal charges for solicitation or drug use. Every charge incurs substantial court costs that accumulate and inhibit their ability to restart their lives. The Magdalene House Legal Clinic partners volunteer attorneys with Belmont law students to file motions on behalf of the Magdalene House residents for forgiveness of these courts costs. This clinic is supported by the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office, the General Sessions judicial bench, and the Davidson County Public Defender’s Office. Volunteer attorneys will work with law students to file a motion and attend a hearing with their Magdalene house resident.
Training for the clinic will take place at 2 pm on November 3rd and cases will be assigned to volunteer attorney and student teams. The hearings will take place all together in early 2018. Volunteer attorneys can expect a total of 5 hours volunteer time and at least 1 hour of dual CLE credit.
